The Candlelight Processional – Christmas 2009
Christmas at Epcot is truly memorable for so many reasons, not least being the very special ‘Candlelight Processional’ which has become an annual tradition, and one not to be missed. In fact, this performance will take place this year for the 39th time, and as usual it will include a presentation of the Christmas Story, read by a variety of famous narrators, together with a huge choir, The Voice of Liberty, and a full 50 piece orchestra. Be prepared to join in with all your favourite Christmas melodies.
There are three performances a night, at 5. 00 pm, 6. 45 and 8 pm, and the show lasts for approximately 40 minutes. The theatre is open air, and takes place whatever the weather, although I believe that it was cancelled in 2002 when simply torrential rain forced its audience and the performers to take shelter. It is therefore advisable to dress accordingly, as some evenings during December can get very chilly, and should it rain you will need waterproof capes etc.
To find this wonderful event you will need to go to the America Gardens Theater in World Showcase, which can be found in front of the American exhibition building. It is used throughout the year for a variety of musical performances, but this magical Christmas story in words and music is my own personal favourite. There is no charge to attend this show, other than your normal Epcot Center admission, but it is very popular so you do need to start queuing for seats at least 45 minutes before the performance starts, and even then you are not guaranteed a seat. In fact, you can purchase a special dinner package which includes a ticket for Reserved Seating for the Candlelight Processional, but you must eat before the performance.
The following restaurants offer a special dining package:
Japan Pavilion – Mitsukoshi Teppanyaki Dining Room
Canada Pavilion – Le Cellier Steakhouse
Mexico Pavillion – San Angel Inn
Italy – L’Originale Alfredo di roma Ristorante
France – Chefs de France
Germany – Biergarten
United Kingdom – Rose and Crown
China – The Garden Grill Restaurant
Morocco – Restaurant Marrakesh
The Living Seas – Coral Reef
This year there are some very famous narrators, and the provisional list is as follows:
Isabella Rossellini -- Nov. 27-29
John O' Hurley -- Nov. 30, Dec. 1-2
Steven Curtis Chapman -- Dec. 3-5
TBA -- Dec. 6-8
Andy Garcia -- Dec. 9-11
Vanessa Williams -- Dec. 12-14
Abigail Breslin -- Dec. 15-17
Whoopi Goldberg -- Dec. 18-20
Brian Dennehy -- Dec. 21-23
Edward James Olmos -- Dec. 24-26
Angela Bassett & Courtney B. Vance -- Dec. 27-30.
It is a very moving performance and one which really welcomes in the Christmas festivities, so if you get the chance to go and see it. You will really feel as if Christmas is here.
