T Rex Restaurant - Downtown Disney
If you have a small child or children in your group, do try the T Rex Restaurant in Downtown Disney. This restaurant is always very busy so you will have to expect to wait anywhere from fifteen minutes to thirty minutes. You just go up to the desk located outside and give them your name and the number in your group and they will call you over a loudspeaker when your table is ready. To while away the time they have a souvenir shop attached to the restaurant. This is an absolute heaven for small boys who love everything to do with dinosaurs (and what small boy does not). There are, of course, all manner of toys relating to dinosaurs from very cheap small ones to huge electronic very expensive ones. Do remember though before you get too carried away with your child’s demands – you may have to pack a very large dinosaur into a very small luggage allowance. There are also cuddly dinosaurs for the tots and books and kits for the older ones. At the back of the store is a build-you-own-dinosaur section, just like the build-a-bear-workshop stores. To the side of the store is a play area where you can dig for fossils and search for footprints, in fact there is so much to do and see that it is sometimes difficult to get the children to leave and go to eat.
In the centre of the shop and the restaurant there is a display which houses a massive working model of a tyrannosaurus Rex. It has two beside it and it is in motion all the time but every so often it roars (scaring small children to bits) and moves it’s head and the babies answer it’s roars with their own.
When you are called into the restaurant to go to your table you will be led through what looks like a pre-historic world. There are all manner of Jurassic animals from T Rex to Pterodactyls and everything in-between. The restaurant is split up into different sections, we happened to be in the ice-age, and everything around us was made to look like ice but beautifully done. Every so often your see the light dim and all the dinosaurs roar as a mock thunder storm happens. Most people spend a lot of their time while waiting for their food, taking photos and the children all get hats and colouring sheets and crayons.
The menu is very extensive and everybody should be able to find something they like. There are burgers, steaks, chicken, salads etc. all the usual Disney fare and the children have their own menu.
Do give it a try but don’t expect a quiet dining experience!
