Star Wars Weekends 2010

Are you a Star Wars fan? If the answer is ‘yes’ and you are coming to Orlando, Florida in May or June this year, 2010, then you are in for a real treat – the Star Wars Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from late May to early June.

The dates for this event in 2010 have been recently released and are as follows:

May 21-23

May 28-30

June 4-6

June 11-13

If you have never been to these Star War Weekends then do go and try them out for yourself, as they are great fun. This annual event is really popular, and it celebrates the space fantasy ‘Star Wars’ Saga, as well as the animated TV series, The Clone Wars. There is lots to do and see, including special shows, a special parade, presentations, photo opportunities and lots of memorabilia to purchase. They say that this year’s event is going to be even more full of surprises.

There will be special celebrity guests from the movies, who visit the park, so plenty of photo opportunities. If you want an autograph then you need to get to the parks early so that you can get a special Fast Pass. These Fast Passes guarantee you an autograph, but they are very popular and go extremely quickly, so the early bird catches the worm.

There is a daily parade, featuring celebrity guests from Star Wars movies, as well as members of the local Star Wars club, whose costumes are pretty amazing. If you want your child to take part in the parade, you need to go near the Star Wars Weekend Information Desk at around 10am, and then look for a Disney employee handing out wristbands for the parade. Over the years there have been numerous appearances by actors from the movies, including Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), David Prowse (Darth Vader), Kenny Baker (R2D2), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Jake Lloys ( a young Anakin Skywalker) as well as Anthony Daniels (C3PO). As yet Disney has not released the line up for 2010 but there are sure to be some well known faces among the celebrities.

The park is full of characters from the movies in full costume, but please note, these are not necessarily the actors who played the part in the movie, as lots of visitors also dress up in full costume, but all six movies will be represented - Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. If you are lucky you may well see costumed characters such as Ewoks, Jawas, Queen Amilda, Luke Skywalker, and of course the stormtroopers. Don’t forget to look out for Mickey Mouse, who appears as a Jedi Knight. With his scaled down sabre he is definitely one for a photo opportunity.

Of course, the fact that so many guests also dress up in various costumes, makes the park even more fun - so why not join in and become Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader or Princess Leia? Although the schedule of events has not yet been released, in 2009 there were interviews with celebrities and some of the creative talent involved in producing the Star Wars movies. The Jedi Training Academy is also very popular during these weekends. In previous years there has been the Padawan Mind Challenge, where children aged 12 and under can test their Star Wars knowledge in front of the Jedi Council. If you want to know what went into the making of the Star Wars movies then ‘Behind the Force’ does just that.

Of course, as you would expect, there is plenty of memorabilia to buy at the Tatooine Traders shop adjacent to the ‘Star Tours’ attraction, where there will be merchandise which is exclusive to the event, as well as limited editions pins, clothing, posters, medallions and other commemorative items.

And speaking of ‘Star Tours, ’ this great simulator ride (which during normal times rarely has long queues) will be very popular, especially as it will be closing in October for its revamp into ‘Star Tours II, ’ so you may need to grab a Fast Pass for this attraction.

Star Wars is the third most popular movie series, after James Bond and Harry Potter so it is no wonder that the Star Wars weekends have such a huge following.
