Star Tours – Disney’s Hollywood Studios
If you love the Star Wars movies and are fond of simulator rides then this is the attraction for you. Star Tours is on the far side of Echo Lake in Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios. You will meet R2D2, C3PO and other well-known characters from the film.
There are sometimes longish lines for this attraction but Disney has lessened the boredom with an exceptionally good pre-show. This begins before you enter the building with a walk around an Ewok village which then leads you beneath the huge AT-AT walkers, which stand guard at the entrance. Once you are inside the building, the idea is that you are in a hangar area of an intergalactic travel agency called “Star Tours”. You will then be shown to the transport area where you will view a video on overhead screens, which will explain the procedure for loading and the forthcoming flight on your starspeeder.
The flight simulator was actually designed by both Disney and George Lucas. Seating up to forty guests, the simulator will send you flying into hyperspace accompanied by an action-packed video. Your pilot is a droid, who is taking his first solo flight, and unfortunately is not used to the programming onboard the starspeeder. Passengers are in for a bumpy ride! The ride lasts approximately ten minutes where you will pass by comets and asteroids, try to avoid the Imperial fighters, get caught up in a Star Destroyer’s tractor beam and then eventually nearly crash land as you make your way back to the hangar bay.
If you prefer your ride rough try to sit on the seats at the end of the back row where as an added bonus you will get the best view of all the action taking place on the screen. Alternatively, if you would prefer a smoother ride I would recommend sitting in the middle or at the front of the simulator. Don’t be afraid to ask the cast member, who is on duty that day, as they will try their very best to accommodate your request.
If you enjoy looking out for the “Hidden Mickeys” in the parks be sure to watch the video just before you board your Starspeeder. Look for the second Ewok entering the Starspeeder and see what he is holding!
In my opinion if you are a Star Wars fan and enjoy thrill rides you will not be disappointed. I would strongly advise you to add it to your must-do-list of attractions whilst visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios!
