ST GEORGES ISLAND
St Georges Island State Park is situated on Gulf Beach Drive near Appalachicola. It is 10 miles south east of east point, off the u. s 98
There are near deserted beaches and dunes and forests and ponds here to enjoy. You can even find oysters in the Appalachicola River.
There is great fishing opportunities on St Georges; as good or better than anywhere in Florida (and that is really saying something)You may catch pompano, redfish, flounder, trout and many more varieties. You will need a license; these are available from sports shops, on line or from larger Walmarts. Also check with the ranger about how many fish you may take and any other fishing rules and regulations
The beaches stretch for many pristine miles, four miles of which are on main drive. The swimming is most enjoyable in the silky warm waters. Afterward you can sun bathe on the clean sands
Because of the naturally dry conditions you will not see as many animals as you are accustomed to see at most State Parks. Raccoons. terrapins, osprey and crabs are common and of course, this is Florida after all, so there are snakes
The abundance of marine life, however, more than makes up for the paucity of animal life.
For birders, this is a good place to visit. Particularly look for migrating birds among the slash pines and live oaks(during the migrating season) Rose crested and blue gros beaks, indigo buntings can be put on your list to look out for. Pack your binoculars and a camera so you are ever ready to view and shoot.
From the beach you can see terns, skimmers. plovers and willets. These beaches never get crowded; even in the peak or holiday seasons.
There is a pic nic area provided for your lunch and there are barbecues; may be you will be grilling the trout that you caught earlier?
The nature trail starts at the camp ground and ends at the showers (the showers are not heated, quite a shock for a sun heated body! )
There are several near by State Parks so maybe you can fit another in to your day. Orman House, for instance or Bald Point State Park or John Gorries museum. Ask a ranger and they will be able to advise you of the best place to fit your interests.
St Georges Island State Park is open from 8 a. m. to sun down and costs only $5 for a car full of up the 8 people In the hotter months do take sun screen, sunhats, insect repellant and lots of water.
