Spoiling yourself on holiday – Ice Cream
One of the great traditions of being on holiday is, in a word, ICE CREAM! (OK so that’s two words but you know what I mean). This tradition is no better found than in Florida. Apart from the usual Haagan Daaz and the Disney character ice creams there are the Ice Cream Parlours.
Two of the best I have found are without doubt Ghiradelli’s Soda Fountain in Downtown Disney’s Market Place and The Cold Stone Creamery (branches all over Orlando)
GHIRADELLIS ICE CREAM AND CHOCOLATE SHOP
Ghiradelli’s specialise in ice cream sundaes although they do wafer cones and milk shakes too. They have very exotic names such as The Domingo Banana Hot Fudge Sundae, The Cable Car Rocky Road Sundae and who could resist the Earthquake Family Favourite which has eight scoops of ice cream. eight delicious toppings, fresh bananas, whipped cream, chopped almonds, chocolate chips and cherries. At $29. 95 I assume it is for a family of eight to share – any takers for a go at it alone!
They have a total of fifteen different sundaes to choose from or a selection of twelve flavours served in a waffle cone. You can have one or two scoops depending on your appetite, but ironically the single scoop actually has two scoops of ice cream! No trip to Downtown Disney is complete without a visit to this wonderful homage to self indulgence.
THE COLD STONE CREAMERY
The Cold Stone Creamery stores that I have tried are in the Florida Mall and at Celebration next to the Crab Shack on the H192. They have a range of about 12 ice cream sundaes and about sixteen different flavours of ice cream to have in a waffle cone or small bowl, plus various toppings: or you can make up your own ideas and they will make them for you right in front of you. They take the ice cream and slap it onto a cold slab (hence the name – cold stone) make a dent in the middle and add all the extras. They then mash the whole lot up and present it in a bowl. The ice cream is probably the creamiest in the whole world. I am sure it must be made with pure double cream – wow to the waistline! These new Cold Stone stores are opening up at quite a rate in the Orlando area and are becoming quite a talking point amongst returning Florida holiday makers.
So go on, treat yourself, you’ll be glad you did.
