Splash Mountain, Magic Kingdom, Orlando
Splash Mountain is located in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Even before you actually see the ride you will hear the delighted screams of the riders inside their eight passenger logs, as they plummet down into the water below.
Frontierland is where you will find this extremely popular attraction situated between Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and the Pirates of the Caribbean. Splash Mountain is based on Walt Disney’s movie “Song of the South” featuring Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear alongside many other creatures.
Splash Mountain is a Fastpass attraction which means you can collect a ticket to avoid having to stand in long lines. You will receive a ticket from the Fastpass machine, after inserting your park pass, which will give you an hour’s time slot in which to return to the ride. Meanwhile, you are free to visit other attractions, dine or shop anywhere within the parks or even go back to your villa for a swim if there is enough time. Be aware though that you cannot get another Fastpass for at least another hour or until you have been on the ride.
For a Disney ride this must rate as one of the longest, eleven minutes to be exact. Well-know songs accompany you on your journey as you cruise around the narrow channels aboard your log. “How Do You Do”, “Everybody' s Got a Laughin' Place” and “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” to name a few. When our daughters were little they were convinced that one of the lines in one of the songs was “Show us your bum! ” Knowing that Disney surely would never allow such language in a family orientated park we had to go on the ride several times before we realised what they were actually singing was “Sure as you’re born! ”
You will get wet on this ride as it features five drops, the last one being the highest, five storeys to be exact. If you want to stay dry I recommend you wear a poncho, which can be bought at any of the Disney stores around the parks, or ask one of the cast members if you can be seated at the back of the log. However, half the fun on a hot summer’s day is to sit at the very front and get completely soaked. You will soon dry off!
Look for the Hidden Mickey at the end of the ride – it is located in the last scene “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah”, look for Mickey lying on his back in the pink clouds just to the right of the riverboat.
As you exit the ride do not forget to stop and look at the photograph which has been taken during your ride. These photographs are available to buy in special frames and are a great way to remember your incredible journey into the world of Brer Rabbit and Splash Mountain.
Unfortunately, there are restrictions on this ride. Expectant mothers, those with heart conditions, and back or neck problems should not ride. Those under 40 inches may not ride and the cast members will measure your children’s height to check if they think that they might not be tall enough!
