What’s so Special about Florida - Part 2
In Part 1 I talked about the climate and weather being special , well in Part 2 I am going to talk about the people of Florida and how genuinely friendly and helpful they are.
The first thing I noticed on my very first trip to Florida was the people, when I say the people I mean how genuinely friendly and helpful they are, maybe I noticed this more because I am from the UK where people tend to be more reserved. I guess I should have expected this because after all the USA is know as the service capital of the world. Maybe it’s the slow paced lifestyle that makes the difference, for anyone that has a business over there will know work gets carried out at a much slower pace with a lot less stress than here in the UK
That’s not to say anything negative but quite the opposite the slow relaxed way of business in Florida is for more relaxing and productive and ultimately fulfilling in the long run.
My first impression was in the wait for the hire car, I was impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of the rental staff and when I heard for the first time that well know Floridian phrase “Have a nice day” it puts you in a great mood for the rest of the day.
Next I collected my bags only to be greeted by a friendly porter, “may I take those for you sir” he asked “no its OK” I replied, as a first time visitor I was unsure of directions of where to pick the car up etc and asked him for advice. Despite not receiving any business from me he was only to happy to offer help and advice one again the phrase “Have a nice day” was heard.
After arriving at our villa rental we decided to take a quick trip to the supermarket to buy a few supplies, we were unsure weather you could drink the tap water and so found ourselves at a wonderful place called Publix. We wandered around the supermarket buying a few items and could not find one or two items and upon seeing us looking puzzled we were approached by an elderly gentlemen working in the supermarket, he asked us what we were looking for and quickly had us sorted once again the phrase “Have a nice day” was uttered.
At the checkout another employee helped pack our bags and took the trolley from me and proceeded to wheel it out to the car park, “which is your vehicle madam? ” he asked my wife, now this is service! We had a short chat whilst unloading the trolley and he was genuinely friendly and interested in the visitors from the UK.
Some people may say that being polite is part of their job and they would be right but Floridians are genuinely friendly the number of times we have been out shopping or in the parks for an American couple to come over and start to chat to us is amazing.
You don’t usually get this sort of friendliness, this is a another reason Florida is so special to me.
