Space Mountain Refurbished
Although Splash Mountain is still our favourite ride at Magic Kingdom the newly refurbished Space Mountain comes a close second. This is a Fastpass attraction and is usually very busy. I recommend that when you arrive at the Park you look at the attractions board near to the entrance for the waiting times and if they are lengthy go to Space Mountain and get your Fastpass.
This is a great ride for teens and adults. I think it is not really very suitable for young children but if parents talk to a Cast Member they will make arrangements for them to take turns on the ride. There are the usual restrictions that guests with high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems, or that suffer from motion sickness should not go on the ride. Guests on motorized scooters or ECVs must transfer to an available wheelchair, then from the wheelchair to the attraction ride vehicle.
This ride recently re-opened after a nine month refurbishment and we found the track is now much smoother and the ride much darker. New interactive games have also been added to the queue line which helps with the waiting time.
As with many Disney rides riders photos are taken during the ride. You will need to be prepared for this as unlike other rides this takes place at the beginning of the ride. The reason they put it in the beginning is because if it was later in the ride the strobe from the camera flash would ruin the darkness and unpredictability of the ride.
You will find the refurbished ride much more comfortable than the original. You get in a rocket-shaped vehicle in the glow-in-the-dark Space Port and begin to climb up the 180-foot high mountain, passing the Mission Control booth with flashing lights all around you. Once at the top, you can feel the wind on your face as you are propelled into the blackness of the dark universe lit up by shooting stars, satellites and constellations.
It is so scary because most to the ride takes place in the dark so you just never know which way you are going to turn or drop. The ride goes at less than 30 mph but it feels so much faster.
At the end of the ride when you leave your rocket vehicle, you will board a moving runway to the Tomorrowland area. As you travel on this runway you will pass scenes of futuristic homes and businesses.
Even if you have ridden on this attraction before it is well worth going to the refurbished one you will really enjoy it.
