Silver Moon Drive In Movie Theatre
Located in Lakeland, Florida the Silver Moon Drive in Theatre is definitely a 1950’throw back that is definitely worth a visit. It opened its doors (or gates) in April 1948 and is still going strong today,
Located at 4100 US Highway 92, Fl 33815 it is approximately 40 minutes from the Davenport area. Just head out on the I-4 West towards Tampa for approximately 30 miles, take Exit 28 of the I4 towards US-92 Lakeland, Exit 28 turns left and becomes Florida 546 (W Memorial Blvd) after about 105 miles turn right onto US92 W/N Wabash Ave stay on this road for about a mile then again turn right onto FL-600 W/US-92 W and the theatre is on the left.
The drive in theatre has too large screen at opposite ends of the parking lot. You pay at a toll booth on arrival approximately $4 per person (aged 10+) and $1 for under 10’s (correct as at March 2012). The lady in the toll both was really helpful and told us all we needed to know. The first film usually starts around 8pm with a later film around 10pm. Good news is once you have paid you can stay for both movies (or I believe move from one screen to the other).
There is an on site snack bar that sells Pizzas, hot dogs, corn dogs, salted popcorn, nachos, chocolate, drinks (including beer), etc and is reasonably priced.
When you drive towards the screens there are bumps to able you to park your car on which tilts it to enable you to watch the screen, The bumps get bigger the nearer you get to the screen (so the car is pointing more upwards so you can see the screen). Some people with hatchbacks appear to favour parking the car backwards, opening up the back and lying on in the boot area. If your car has a hatchback this would be great and I would be tempted to take pillars and a blanket.
The audio is now digital and the sound can be picked up through your car radio. However, there is still evidence of the old speakers that used to be placed on the window, but these I think are now just for show. However in summer months with the hot, humid nights in Florida this will be beneficial as windows can remain up and the air cond on! ! ! This has an extra bonus in the fact that the shut windows will also keep the mosquitoes at bay, I would also recommend making sure you have the mosquito spray handy (just in case).
To add a little ambiance to the 1950’s theme, there is a train line running near the drive-in and every so often you get the rumbling as the train speeds along (occasionally hooting its horn).
On Saturday and Sunday mornings the drive in is transformed into a bustling market. Gates open at 5am and customer admission and parking is free. The snack bar is open for breakfast too! !
