Separated by a common language
It is often quoted that Britain and America are separated by our common language and the more time I spend in Florida the more this becomes apparent.
From the time the car rental is picked up at the start of your
vacation the words
hood and
trunk are paramount for the bonnet and boot. The car will almost certainly be filled with fuel – in this case
gas not petrol and diesel is not as commonly used in the States.
Out onto the
Freeway and you drive on an
Interstate pass the
billboards and in time will probably arrive at a
Service Area, do not expect it to be similar to a UK Motorway Service area but probably just
Restrooms and vending machines. Ensure during your driving that you do not
tailgate the vehicle in front of you.
You arrive at your chosen villa either in Orlando or at one of the Gulf Coast
Subdivisions and in your kitchen will be a
range which may or may not have a grill but will have an oven. Water appears when you turn on the
faucets. Should you wish to wrap food for the refrigerator it can either be done with
clingwrap or if you wish to use tin foil then look for
Reynolds.
Into the bathroom and it will certainly contain a shower and maybe a
tub in which to have a bath.
Outside the villa will be an under covered patio termed a
lanai and beyond the pool area a
yard with grass, flowers and trees.
Once settled into the villa and you start to explore your surroundings make sure you only use the
crosswalk to reach the other side of the road having left your car in the
parking lot.
Shopping is a pleasure; remember women’s clothing sizes are one size down from UK sizes. In general
Misses sizes go up to about a UK 16 with
Women’s and
Plus Sizes available.
After a days shopping a meal is in order. In order to eat eggs cooked
sunnyside up pick up the
flatware. Maybe order a
soda instead of an alcoholic drink. Dessert may come with
frosting, don’t be alarmed it will not be extra cold but just covered with icing. Any children in your group who have sat in their
stroller may at this time appreciate a
popsicle to lick.
Should you be visiting during Thanksgiving to Christmas you are in the
Holidays period and many stores will be having their sales.
Enjoy the differences in the language and the culture of our two nations.
