Florida Guide > Disney Parks
No UFO for me thanks, just the salad!!
Disney does just about everything well, but one thing that stands out over the years, is without doubt the quantity and quality of REALLY good restaurants! Hollywood Studios was the park we tried our first real, “themed “ restaurant! We had just come out of the Muppet’s 3D show (never fails to impress!) and were ready to eat, when , we almost walked past part of a 50’s convertible car!! I realized it was an eating point, but only just, the outside was, in part a little uninteresting , but I was determined on this occasion to eat in a different place to the usual fast food places my family like to steer me towards! I had won, they were hungry, and we were right outside the Sci-Fi Diner.
I had no real understanding of what was in store for us, but what a treat! I had our daughter sold on 2 counts the minute we went in! First the seating looked interesting, and then there were films being shown!! Hooray!!
Clearly we may have walked past this inconspicuous place before, but by the numbers of people already inside, and we waited a few minutes for a table, it is likely a good idea to try and book a table early. Planning is key on a trip to the parks, and what we do now, but hadn’t on this occasion, is book at the dining reservations hut when we arrive at the park. This is located just up the main street on the junction of Hollywood and Vine Street.
While you wait to be seated, following check –in, you wait in an area with plain wooden benches and posters on the walls. As soon as your table is ready your server escorts you around the back of the restaurant past hoardings and billboards, very old Hollywood!! But then, when you get a proper glimpse of the restaurant, there is a bit of a “wow” factor to it! In fact it was hard to believe we had not been in there before, though we excused ourselves that it was quite easy to miss from the outside.
Basically, the entire inside of the restaurant is designed to look like a Drive - in movie theatre, hence it is very dark (be aware , it may not be suitable for younger guests, older visitors and guests with visual difficulties), complete with night sky and romantic twinkling stars. The overall effect was really cool. We particularly liked the "tables" , which are like old fashioned 50's style convertible cars, with seating for 2 passengers in front and 2 behind! There were one or two tables that were situated at the back of the “theatre” which were not in a “themed” car style table. But I do not recollect there being larger seating areas for bigger parties of diners.
Although the food is classic 50's American fast food, it was a “cut above” the standard burger meal. There is a wide selection available, from salads to steaks and chicken, and we found it to be good value with great tastes, and I for one enjoyed the variety.
Showing, the entire time you are in the restaurant, on a giant screen, are old B movies trailers and advertisements. I think the “age” of the clips, meant that the “enjoyment at this point, was slightly lost on our daughter, but we loved it! Eating your meal while snips of "Creatures from the Black Lagoon" or "It came from Outer Space" , are showing
So, if you are in the mood for something with a completely different “flavour” , transport yourself to the “twilight Zone” and “pull up” at the Sci-Fi Diner in Hollywood Studios!!!
