Sci-Fi Dine-in Theater
Having a meal at the Sci-Fi Diner is probably one of the most original dining experiences we have ever had in a Walt Disney World restaurant. The Sci-Fi Dine-in Theater is located in Disney’s Hollywood Studios and guests are seated in miniature, six seater convertibles in a drive-in movie setting. You are of course indoors, the heat would be too intense in the summer months and the thought of sitting, eating you meal, under umbrellas in torrential rain isn’t too appealing either.
Whilst the food isn’t up to The Brown Derby standard, it perhaps might be advisable to pop in for a snack, say an appetiser or dessert and definitely a milk shake. That way you can soak up the atmosphere and watch the science fiction movies being shown on the big screen whilst you pretend you really are at a 50’s drive-in movie theatre.
It’s quite dark inside the restaurant, which adds to the ambience, but this makes it very difficult to read the menu. The sci-fi movie clips are all in black and white, some of which are quite funny. A word of warning though, the temperature is always cold. Whether this is intentional so that you feel as though you really are outside at night, I don’t know, but I would suggest taking a sweater with you. It is also uncannily quiet which seems quite strange when you first arrive. You then realise this is because everyone is engrossed in watching the movie clips.
When our daughters were younger they were seated in the front seats of our convertible and our server asked them if they could drive. When they answered “no”, much to their amusement she gave them their very own drivers licence.
The menus have a movie theme, the appetisers are your “Previews”, the main course is your “Main Feature” followed by your dessert called the “Closing Credits”. Previews include soup, salads and crispy onion rings. Main Features include salmon, steak, pasta and ribs whilst the Closing Credits feature Chocolate Moon Pie and the Happiest Celebration on Earth Cheesecake.
Alcoholic beverages and soft drinks are available, but for adults only, why not try one of the “Cosmic Concoctions” all with science fiction sounding names. Lunar Landing, Marsha’s Martian, Solar Eclipse or The Milky Way to name but a few. Children will love the “Interstellar Concoction” cocktails. These are served in a souvenir glow-in-the-dark cup complete with a lighted ice cube!
The Sci-Fi Dine-in Theater is open for lunch and dinner serving American cuisine at moderate prices. Priority seating is usually advisable especially during holiday periods.
