Sarasota – a grand day out
After all the hurly burly rush of going from theme park to theme park, what could be nicer or more relaxing than a day or two on a sun kissed beach. My recommendation for this delight would be Sarasota.
Sarasota is about an hour and a half drive from Orlando. It is one of the most celebrated beaches on the Gulf coast. It advertises itself as having the softest, whitest beaches in the Gulf coast, if not the world. Sarasota Key is famous for it’s beach weddings with its spectacular back drop of blue water and palm trees. It is not just a place to laze about on the beach all day, it also has so many different outdoor activities, so it is hard to choose what to do first.
There is fishing, canoeing or diving or on dry land there is cycling or golfing. For dining there are the two extremes, fine dining or casual. There are several beach restaurants where you can just leave the beach and go and sample the freshest fish in the area as it is caught in the morning and served for lunch and dinner.
The beach is part of a broken chain of sand that spreads north and south. At the north end is Lido Key which is where most of the dolphins are spotted. To just stroll along the waters edge or go for a brisk walk is absolutely magical, the beach appears to go on and on as far as the eye can see. Your feet will sink in to the soft white sand and the crystal clear blue water gently laps up to your feet.
For family fun – especially the children – you could take them to see Circus Sarasota which keeps alive the tradition of the big top. They can even be taught some of the circus tricks by the experts. There is also the G-Wiz Science museum which is very popular with the children of all ages.
For the grown ups, the shopping is wonderful. Go to St. Armand’s Circle which has speciality shops or to Venice Main Street for an idea of what small town America is really like. There are also the usual shopping malls such as, Ellenton Mall Factory Outlet or Westfield Shopping Town which has more than 140 shops and prime outlets.
So head off to Sarasota for a wonderfully relaxing day or two to unwind and try something a bit different.
