SAN FELASCO HAMMOCK
San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park is situated in Alucha, just east of the I. 75 over pass and 4 miles north of Gainseville. This park covers 6900 acres of the natural Florida.
This park is the home to one of the last mature forests in Florida and houses many champion trees. There are 18 plant communities; the most notable of these is the hydric hammock, up land pine and sand hill. Look especially down the sloping parts of sink holes and ravines where you can spot many rarely seen species of plants.
The huge elevation changes and lime stone outcrops are ideal for hard wood trees to flourish and the Climax Mesic Hammock is awesome. Lakes, ponds and steep head springs give this park a very varied landscape.
Turkey Creek, Blues Creek and Cellon Creek all traverse San Felasco Hammock before draining into the aquifer by way of the swallows.
All this makes a great habitat for wildlife; look out for the gray fox, turkey, white tailed deer and bobcat. Bird lovers will get their binoculars out for the many rare specias and migrating wild fowl.
There are some special events held here by the rangers, ; contact the park to see what may be on during your holiday.
Autumn is the very best time to go to this park when the Golden Rod makes it burst into glorious colour.
This is a park where you will need to take all you want with you; this should include high factor sun screen, a good insect repellant, shady sun hat, light colour t. shirt and comfy walking shoes. Also useful are a compass, binoculars and a mobile phone.
Take lots of water with you and some snacks; trail mix is good and plan your route so you are back at the car park for sun down when the park will close. The park opens at 8. a. m.
Entrance fee is $2 per vehicle and includes up to 8 people (beat that for value)
You may want to stay overnight in Gainseville which will give you the opportunity to explore some other State Parks. These are among those that are within reach;
- River Rise Preserve State Park
- Paines Prairie Preserve State Park
- Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park
