Ride Guide – Primeval Whirl
One of the two rides which manage the trick of time travel, in Dinoland USA, Primeval Whirl is definitely the more kitsch of the two! The area that it is situated in is called Chester and Hester’s Dino-Rama and this is very much like a carnival fair type area with some simple rides and skill type carnival games to play.
Primeval Whirl is a classic Wild Mouse type roller coaster. These feature small cars, in this case holding four people. The ride is a gravity driven roller coaster, so there is the classic clanking ride up the first incline to get the energy necessary for the whole ride. What makes the Wild Mouse rides different from traditional roller coasters is that the cars can also spin, like a Waltzer type ride. This makes each ride unique as the spinning is governed, somewhat, by the occupants of the car.
As you go down and up the various slopes and through the tight twisting turns, the spinning ensures that there are plenty of lateral g-forces to provide a lot of excitement. What does this mean? Literally, that you are all pushed sideways! It is great fun as you never are quite sure of where the ride is going to take you next. At various different points throughout the track there are brake mechanisms which slow or stop the spinning action, to provide a level of control on the car. There are times, however, that you may go down some of the larger drops backwards!
In keeping with this whole area of the park, the ride is themed more like a fair ground type attraction, rather than the usually more intricate and subtle styling that Disney employs. It really works well in this setting. The colours of the ride are vibrant, the music is groovy and definitely zany.
The only disappointing factor about the ride is the minimum ride height. It is completely understandable why there needs to be minimum ride heights and you do get thrown around quite a lot on this ride, so it will no doubt be set at an appropriate level. Unlike a lot of the roller coasters, however, it is completely visible from the surrounding area and combining that with the lighter than normal theming, this roller coaster is perhaps less intimidating in appearance compared to some of the other rides. It would be nice if it were more accessible to some smaller guests. If you are travelling with younger family members, however, remember that you can always do the rider switch to allow visitors who are tall enough to be able to ride the attraction.
