Ride Guide – Pirates of the Caribbean
The ride that inspired the films that has now inspired the ride! How convoluted is that? As you walk between Frontierland and the central hub of the Magic Kingdom, you are in Adventureland and you go past several rides, with Pirates of the Caribbean perhaps being one of the most popular. Long before the film franchise started, the ride has been entertaining guests in the Magic Kingdom.
As you would expect, Pirates of the Caribbean is a boat ride, with people sitting four or five to a row and six rows to a boat. As you wait in line for the loading area have a good look around at all the scenery in the pre-show area. There are two different wait lines and the attractions that you pass are different for each one, but there is lots of pirate memorabilia to enjoy.
Once you set sail on your journey the initial scenes are quite spooky, passing through a mist screen featuring Davey Jones from the films floating in the mist. You then go past scenes of a desert island with some pirate skeletons lying in the sand and further on there is a pirate ship crewed by a skeleton crew heading into a storm. An eerie voice calls out that “Dead men tell no tales”. This is definitely the scariest bit of the ride for any younger crew that you may have sailing with you!
There is a short descent into the main ride area, taking you on a trip through the streets of a village on the island of Isla Tesoro. This area has recently had the storyline adapted from just being pirate scenes of a town being ransacked, to also featuring Captain Jack Sparrow hiding amongst the scenes. Various characters throughout the journey are looking for Captain Jack. There are also classic scenes from the ride, which were incorporated into the film. For example, when you get to the jail scene, you will see the captives trying to entice the dog with a bone so that they can grab the keys.
As you turn the last corner the final scene of the journey now shows Captain Jack enjoying the spoils of his piracy and lazily rocking back and fore draping himself over a chair. As he does he sings the song and also doles out snippets of wisdom.
As you exit the ride you can hear Davey Jones calling for you to come back soon and then it is up a moving walkway to bring you out into . . . the gift shop! Stuffed full of pirate paraphernalia and merchandise to entice the younger crew! Beware! !
If you know the Pirates of the Caribbean films, then the recent refurbishment and embellishment of the ride with stronger references to the film and the inclusion of Captain Jack Sparrow definitely adds to it.
