Rainforest Café Experience
The Rainforest Café is as much a thrilling experience, a fabulous occasion, as it is a place to eat your dinner! As you approach the outside of the restaurant you are greeted with a wonderful landscape of tropical planting, waterfalls and even a volcano.
There are two branches of the restaurant to choose from – one in Downtown Disney and the other just outside the gates of Animal Kingdom theme park. The Animal Kingdom restaurant is usually a bit quieter, but at busier times in Downtown Disney, you can put your name down for a table and then go off for half an hour and have a drink, or do a little bit of shopping.
It won’t be long before your ‘Safari’ time comes around! ! The Rainforest Cafe Restaurant chain operates under the strap line " Rainforest Cafe-A Wild Place to Shop and Eat" and is one of the most imaginatively themed restaurants we’ve ever come across. You dine in a lush tropical rainforest, surrounded by tanks of brightly coloured tropical fish, waterfalls, caves and rocks, talking trees, live birds and full sized animated wildlife. To complete the picture, the waiting staff are dressed in safari khaki. There are two area of the restaurant to choose from for your seating-the gorilla room and the elephant room. There is not much to choose between them, but maybe the elephant room is a little quieter.
As you eat your meal under a starry night, you are aware of the sights, sounds and smells of the forest all around you. Every twenty minutes or so, the sky darkens and special effects create a thunderstorm with rain, thunderclaps and lightning which in turn set off the animatronic elephants and chimpanzees. The Rainforest Cafe Restaurant also has large sports bar serving a range of speciality drinks under a giant mushroom.
The food is a mix of seafood, beef, chicken dishes, pasta and pizza. The portions are huge and there is a great choice. For under twelve year olds, there is a super kids menu and they can also choose to have smaller portions of the main entrees. The food does have a tropical slant to it, with many entrees incorporating fruit, coconut and spices.
Deserts on offer include classics like key Lime Pie and a good selection of ice-creams and sundaes. A great desert for sharing is the famous Volcano! ! This is a massive pile of ice-cream, chocolate brownies, fudge sauce and whipped cream. It is topped by a sparkler and comes to your table accompanied by a loud shout from the staff and a round of applause –don’t order it if you are embarrassed easily!
