Rainforest Cafe - Downtown Disney
The Rainforest Cafe is actually a restaurant which serves all the usual, burgers, steaks, chicken, fish and salads and provides a children’s menu of grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken strips, macororni and cheese plus others. It is situated in Market place at Downtown Disney. Outside is a very life-like alligator which every so often moves it’s head and yawns. At the entrance is a desk where you give your name and the number in your party and they will then give you an approximate wait time. You will be called by tannoy when your table is ready.
To while away the time waiting for your table, there is a shop attached which sells all manner of clothes relating to the Rainforest; naturally there are T-shirts and sweatshirts advertising the Rainforest Café. There are also toys and games for children such as life-like rubber snakes and spiders (lovely) also they have a good selection of small rocks of beautiful colours. If you so desire you can buy a pith helmet and safari jacket!
When your name is called you will be taken to your table. The whole restaurant dining area is set out like a jungle with animals peering from behind trees and snakes crawling on rocks. The children will be given a hat and a colouring sheet and some crayons. However, most of the children want to go and explore the restaurant as there are so many working models of jungle animals. At regular intervals it suddenly goes very dark and thunder and lightning can be heard. This causes all the animals to move their heads wildly and roar and shriek. It is really very realistic as the “rain” pours down – but nobody gets wet!
The food is very good and served relatively quickly. The burgers are huge as are the steaks. There is a variety of chicken dishes served many ways, and of course they come served with a salad. There are a few pasta dishes and quite a few salads, caeser salad, chefs salad and a few European ones too. Although it is quite expensive compared to many of the restaurant outside the Disney area, you do get a lot of entertainment thrown in and the children never complain about waiting as they are too busy exploring.
This is definitely a family dining experience and not an intimate dinner for two, but if you children they will be over-awed. Many children seem to be bought to the restaurant for their birthdays, judging by the amount of lit cakes that went past us. The make quite a thing of birthday children, with all the staff parading to the table and clapping as the cake is presented covered in sparklers.
This is a very special dining experience to add to your Disney vacation.
