PONCE DE LEON
Ponce De Leon Springs State Park is on the C. R. 18. A half mile south of the U. S. 90. It has been the hub of all sorts of events since the nineteen twenties.
This area was originally owned by the Smith Gill family and it was they who built a defence wall for the springs in 1927 to prevent even more erosion.
However, since it had been made out of wood it was necessary to replace it in 1953 with a concrete model and since then it was again replaced in 1983.
The State Park took over in 1970 and since then it has become a magnet for those who want to enjoy some swimming, walking or fishing or just a relaxing day in its quiet beauty.
Ponce De Leon was the leader of the first expedition to Florida in 1513. Legend has it that he was seeking the fountain of youth. Although this area is named after him there is not a single shred of evidence that he actually set foot here.
The water temperature is a constant 68 degrees all year round and an amazing 14 million gallons of water flows in daily from the 2 water sources.
There are 2 good changing room facilities here for your comfort and a dip in the spring (especially in summer) is very welcome.
You may not fish in the bathing area but there are designated areas in the park where you may do so. You are likely to catch chain pickerill, pan fish and of course the ubiquitous big mouth bass. Is there any wet area of Florida, I wonder, that is not stuffed with bass?
There are 2 good trails here to ramble; Spring Run and Sunny Creek. As you walk the hard wood forest you may spot a wild creature. The terrain is formed of swamp, rolling hills and flood plain forest. It is also just possible that you may meet an alligator.
Barbecues are supplied (or you may take your own) so if you are organised you can have a feast. There are pic nic tables dotted around so a simple packed lunch will seem like a feast in these lovely surroundings. There are other State Parks in the surrounding area so ask a ranger for directions and advice.
Entry fee is $3 per vehicle
