Pollo Campero
Several of our guests expressed disappointment when they heard McDonalds in Downtown Disney was to close at the end of April 2010. Most of these were guests who were traveling back to the UK with Virgin Atlantic and were going to use their early check in facility at Downtown Disney. This facility enables them to check in their cases and get their boarding cards and spend the rest of the day free only having to arrive at the airport about an hour and a half before their flight. Hence McDonalds was a good place for them to go to get hungry children served quickly.
There is good news though as McDonalds is to be replaced by Pollo Campero in November 2010.
This is also a fast food outlet internationally famous for its signature Latin chicken and it aims to provide a new restaurant concept serving fresh healthy food to give visitors the experience of family style Latin dining. Pollo Campero states it wants to give its guests “Flavor You Can’t Campero”! Apparently Pollo Campero, who originated from Guatemala, wants to become one of the top 50 quick-service restaurant brands in the United States. It aims to build a brand while retaining the values and service of a family-run business, they already have over 300 restaurants in twelve different countries.
At Pollo Camperos you can try freshly prepared Campero Latin chicken, side dishes such as yuca fries and sweet plantains (cannot wait to try these) and Latin drinks including horchata and tamarindo, not sure what they are. The menu apparently will also include meals such as chef-prepared salads, sandwiches and wraps all made from fresh ingredients.
Apparently all the food is freshly prepared every day and their fried and grilled chicken is marinated to give it the “Campero flavour”. Their fried chicken is then breaded in seasoned flour and slowly pressure-cooked without trans-fats giving it not only more flavour but also making it healthier.
Their grilled chicken has the taste of lime and orange juices, red bell peppers, and a special blend of Latin herbs and spices all added to it, must admit I am beginning to feel hungry!
In addition to these foods you can also get healthy snacks as well as vegetarian, gluten-free, sugar-free, low-sodium or organic foods, so really something for everyone.
Friends of ours have eaten at Pollo Campero in Washington and enjoyed it. They say it is similar to KFC but with a Latin flavour. They recommend the grilled chicken but say have it with a side of rice and peas as the fries are a bit stringy.
Our family will definitely pop in here when it comes to Downtown Disney.
