Places to Visit - Anna Maria Island
Many of you who do decide to venture away from the theme parks probably head the beaches of Daytona or Clearwater
Let me let you into our little secret - its called Anna Maria Island, Its about 3 hours south of Kissimmee heading towards Tampa.
Its probably Florida' s best keep secret - but I guess not for long now that I have mentioned it. Anna Maria Island, has an amazing sugar-white coastline, emerald Gulf waters and quaint business districts, Today, it is now known as a vacation favorite among local, national and international travelers .
Its a place for honeymooners, for those having second honeymoons and anyone who loves the peace and quiet away from the theme parks. Its not commercialised but has some of the most magnificent sea front restaurants you could ever wish to be seen in
We have been three times in the last two years each time spending extra days than we originally planned.
This year we rented a fabulous villa that literally was just across the road from the beach. So close that one of our party was able to bring us a cup of good old english tea over the road to drink on the beach!
The villa we rented had what is called ' witches' posts - these are spiral stairs outside that lead up to a wooden deck area above the top of the villa.
The wooden deck area had tables and chairs that allowed to sit and wait for the maginficent sunsets that Florida is famous for
Aagh red wine tastes so much better when drinking watching amazing sunsets.
As for dining, well there are many restaurants and one particular that we frequented was literally on the beachfront. When you arrive you can wander down onto the beach while you wait for your table, They then buzz you to let you know your tables ready
You can then have magnificent seafood whilst waiting for the sun to go down, Most nights they have a competition to guess the exact time the sun finally disappears - the prize - a bottle of champagne or a meal for two for the lucky winners
The most amazing sight I have ever seen was gazing out over the beach and watching thousands of birds flock across the beach in front of us. This seems to happen each night just half an hour before the sun finally sets
The beaches are amazing , the sea is one of cleanest I have ever seen in Florida
Its my jewel in the crown - don' t tell everyone though ! ! !
