Picnic in the Park - healthy options
Disney came up with another good idea when they introduced Picnic in the Park in April 2009. Not all visitors want to indulge in burgers, chips and even more chips so this is a great option. The basic idea of the programme is to select from two choices of healthy food selections, the first option is sandwiches and the other option is meats.
If you plan in advance which option you want when you go to the Park you can place your order at the desk located to the right of the Island Mercantile building.
Do not leave it until the last minute to place your order, orders must be placed a minimum of one and one half hours prior to picking up. However if you have had a fairly late breakfast and want a later lunch you can order your picnic anytime between park opening and 1:30 p. m. for pick up anytime between 10:30 a. m. and 3:00 p. m.
Apparently all the food is prepared in the kitchens of Tusker House. You have to go to the window of the Kusafari Coffee Shop and Bakery to pick it up.
When this service was first introduced the minimum order was a picnic for 3 people but in June 2009 Disney changed this and you can now get an order for 2 people.
The meal comes in a green re-useable cloth bag and included with your meal are all the necessary plates, napkins, plastic utensils, mayonnaise and mustard.
For the first option of sandwiches you choose from a chicken wrap, ham grinder, tuna pita, turkey focaccia sandwich, or portobello mushroom and vegetable wrap. There is also a choice of one side, two desserts and two bottles of water. At time of writing this guide the price was about $19.
The second option for three consists of your four pieces of Rotisserie Chicken or ¾ lb of Ham, one side, two desserts and water and this costs about $22.
There is a great selection of sides including Chips, Macaroni & Cheese, Seasonal Fruit Salad, Coleslaw, Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Pasta Salad, Green Beans, Tandoori Tofu and Zucchini Squash, Oven-Roasted Potato Wedges.
For dessert you choose from Apple, Brownie, Cookie, Cornbread, Crisped Rice Treat or Orange.
You will also receive a Picnic Spot map that shows you various picnic spots throughout the Park. However if you have the chicken which is hot when you receive it you might want to go the nearest spot which is the Dawa Bar and eat at the tables under one of the umbrellas.
If you do fancy a break from cooked food at lunch time this really is a great alternative.
