PERDIDO KEY
Perdido Key State park is situated just off S. R. 292 15 miles south west of Pensacola on Floridas Gulf Coast. It is one of the barrier islands and covers 247 acres.
Barrier Islands provide gorgeous beaches and this is no exception. You can access the beach via a boardwalk which does a great job of protecting the sea oats.
You will want to spend some time having a relaxing sun bathe and cooling swim and if you have a angler with you then there are marked ares from which they can try their luck at landing dinner. Surf fishing is popular here too. You will need a fishing licence and these are available either on line, from sporting goods shops and also larger Walmarts.
Then you may feel ready to have a long stroll down the beach gazing out to sea. Take your binoculars to spot the sea birds and maybe even a dolphin.
By now you will have worked up quite an appetite; hopefully you have taken a packed lunch with you and can take advantage of the shady pic nic areas that the department have provided for your use.
Now a little about barrier islands.
Barrier Islands are formed by estuaries and wet lands and are elongated shapes running parallel to the shore line. They form in areas with mild tides and gently sloping coastal plain. Mostly islands are bi sected by tidal inlets.
In America barrier islands can be found from New England to the Atlantic Coast and also from the Gulf of Mexico to Texas. They are formed from sand bars, spits and drowned dune ridge.
These islands are not stable and the efforts of people to make them more stable and the effects of building has spoiled their defences somewhat.
Barrier Islands are always gorgeous and Perdido Key is no exception. Perdido Key State Park Entry is a nominal $2 and is payable by the trust system. Hopefully most people gladly pay up since the State Parks Department is so vital in preserving and restoring the real Florida which has such a rich historical and ecological past
You should take with you sunscreen, sun hat, sun glasses, insect repellant, lots to drink and some snacks. Also useful are a camera and binoculars.
