Florida Guide > Disney General
Pay a visit to Disney West Side.
Located next door to Disney Marketplace, West Side offers a great mix of shopping, places to eat and entertainment.
At one end of this area of Downtown Disney is the fabulous Cirque du Soleil big top. It is the permanent home to La Nouba, a breathtaking, flamboyant show that the whole family can enjoy. If you can’t get to see the show, have a browse around their store which has TVs showing excerpts, not only from La Nouba, but from their other spectacular shows.
Walk a little further and you will come across the AMC cinema complex where there are 24 screens showing the very latest films throughout the day and into the evening. You’ll be spoilt for choice!
Next up is the Disney Quest, an indoor theme park offering interactive games to suit everyone. Five floors of the latest technology and a great place to visit if the Florida sunshine gives way to the odd shower of rain!
Across the walkway, House of Blues has live music and often has well known names making an appearance. Southern style cooking is available and there is a Sunday Gospel Brunch too. More shopping opportunities at their on site store for everything blues and folk.
Close by is Bongos Cuban café – opened by Mr and Mrs Gloria Estefan – and recognisable if not by the name then by the huge pineapple sat outside! Step through the doors and back in time to the 30s and 40s for a really different dining experience.
The very lively Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant offers a varied menu for lunch or dinner and has indoor or outdoor dining. And behind the main area of shops is Planet Hollywood. A gi-normous restaurant offering a mix of burgers, steaks and salads and huge screens showing film clips. This place is LOUD! !
You can’t help but walk inside the Virgin Megastore which occupies a large corner plot – it’s un-missable in more ways than one! . A huge place offering every type of music you can think of plus DVDs, books, clothing, live gigs and even a café. You can lose yourself for hours just browsing and listening. When we visit, we always get a coffee and sit on the outdoor upstairs balcony watching what is going on in the street below.
All around is a great mix of independent shops. One is dedicated to fridge magnets of every shape, colour and subject and another to selling copies of sunglasses as worn by your favourite celebrity. In Magic Masters, you can learn how to fool your fiends with ‘real’ magic. You can even treat yourself to a vintage juke box or a Coca Cola machine. Saving the best to last from our point of view, Hoi Paloi has wonderful glass, ceramics and jewellery, all very individual and all superbly crafted. A second store has now opened and that is also a ‘must visit’. There is always something we just have to have!
So there you have it, lots to see and do and well worth a visit on your next trip Downtown.
