Parasailing at theContemporary Resort
Friends of ours, who I must admit are dare devils, went to the Contemporary Resort and came back full of enthusiasm for their parasailing experience.
At the Contemporary dock area there is a small hut where you can sign up for all the water sports. Apparently Sammy Duvall’s runs it and this company leases the space from Disney. If you prefer you can also book in advance.
When they went they paid $120 for two people, tandem parasailing. I have looked up current prices and they are as follows:
Single Flight:
Regular: $90 per flight (8-10 minutes at 450 feet)
Premium: $ 112.50 per flight (10-12 minutes at 600 feet)
Tandem Flight:
Regular: $140 per flight (8-10 minutes at 450 feet)
Premium: $162.50 per flight (10-12 minutes at 600 feet)
The minimum weight for a solo flight was 100 pounds although there is no minimum age. The girl on my friends boat said she once had a 4-year-old parasail with his parent!
My friends wore bathing suits although this was not strictly necessary but they were glad they did.
They headed out onto Bay Lake in the boat and admitted that initially they were nervous. Their specially designed boat enabled take-off and landing from the back of the boat, not from the water.
They had a seat very similar to that of a swing set – the strap going under the tops of your thighs and between your legs. The taller person goes at the back, they got their gear on, including life jackets, and then climbed to the back of the boat onto a deck. There were straps for them to hold onto (and they assured me they really did) then the driver starts going gradually faster, and they were released from the “hold” and up they went.
They went up very gradually and said it was and very smooth. Their view was amazing and just that feeling of floating around up there was incredible. The drifted through the air at 500 feet and even when they looked straight down they were not afraid. They were up there for about 10 minutes.
Their line was then gradually wheeled in and they came down, landing on the deck where they had started. Another couple were not so lucky as they were landed in the water apparently the husband had arranged it with the driver before the parasail!
The parasailing is available seven days a week between 8.30am and 5.00pm. My Father is keen to try this next time he goes over although my fear of heights will stop me. However I believe they also offer water-skiing so I may well be tempted to go along with him.
