Our trip to St. Augustine
Our trip to St. Augustine
On our visit to the villa last September we decided to have a 2 night visit to St Augustine.
We left Davenport about 10 in the morning and set off on out journey. It was a pleasant 2 hour drive with no problems.
We stopped at the Best Western just a 5 min walk from the centre of the town. The hotel was fine nothing special but clean and comfortable at a reasonable price. Our walk to the old town took us past the old fort so did the tour and it was well worth it.
As the oldest town in the USA it is steeped in history and has been kept very much as it has always been. We had dinner at Harrys on the waterfront a great restaurant with a fantastic menu and atmosphere. Eat in or out in the French courtyard.
After a great meal we had booked the ghost tour. We met the tour guide in the town centre at 8 and with about 20 other guests we set of on the tour. It was a laugh and good value but was little more than an escorted pub crawl which suited me. So a good night and a non to steady walk back to the hotel. No breakfast at the hotel so we took the short walk to the waterfront and had breakfast in a small waterfront café. As usual great food at a great price.
After breakfast we found the waterfront office to buy tickets for the road train. This is a must at $18 you get a 3 day pass for the road train which takes in 18 stops and you can get on and off where and when you want. We took in all the sites a gleaned a lot of information from the tour guide who is also the driver. We boarded on the beach front and took in the main street St Georges St.
The whole town has a very Spanish feel about it. , a great atmosphere. We took in the Flagler museum and then had lunch in a nice bar. We remounted the train and then visited the Spanish Quarter Village. A look back in time.
Other things to look out for are The oldest school House, The oldest wooden house an many more interesting places too numerous to mention. After a bottle of wine by the pool it was time for dinner at Harrys again ( could not resist this most atmospheric of all places.
After dinner a walk home calling in a couple of bars. The Mill Top well worth a visit. An early breakfast next day a a safe trip back to the villa.
A great couple of days and would recommend it to anyone. Just a word of warning if you are going to visit the town do not book a hotel at St Augustine beach as it is a good trip in a Taxi to town.
