Our First Ever Visit to Florida - Part 14
We headed back to the room with our little map in hand once again we knocked on the door and this time my sister and her family all came to the door dressed and ready to go, I explained that we had spoken to reception and they had recommended that downtown Disney would be very suitable for the kids and finding somewhere to eat.
Well let’s make our way down to the river taxi landing area shall we I suggested, with that, we gathered up the kids and my sister and pushchair and set off walking down the streets heading toward the point on the map where the river taxi was.
Soon we were at the landing area there were two couples already waiting there so we guessed we were definitely in the right area, after about ten minutes the river taxi arrived fully loaded with passengers that were on their way back from downtown Disney.
Passengers unloaded then were all helped on board and carefully seated on the boat once again everyone was very very friendly and helpful, as we set off I asked the driver was this a natural river or man-made, oh this river and many of the lagoons in the Disney area are all man-made he explained.
It hard to put into word the development of the Disney world resort as we later found out on a trip to what was then MGM studious when we visited the back lot tour the whole area was effectively a swamp area when Walt Disney flew over Florida looking for a suitable area to build Disney’s Magic Kingdom.
Walt went on to buy all this swamp land and drain it and created all these rivers and lagoons to build his parks and resort areas the size of it is immense he certainly must have had the vision and a good team to plan all the developments.
The boat took a leisurely voyage along the Sassagoula river this gave us the opportunity to look at all the resorts buildings and marvel out the Disney developments, we passed the Key West resort along the way this looked very nice and is a sprawling island hamlet.
We continued along the river and shortly after we passed Disney' s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, this is styled on a famous Victorian inspired New York resort famous for its spas and horse racing
