Our First Ever Visit to Florida - Part 10
At last we are finally at the front of the queue for the car hire we approach the desk with our pre-booked car hire paperwork, the salesperson looks at the paperwork and starts his sales speech, how many in your party 4 adults and 4 children Oh he says you have booked a van (like a small minibus here in the UK ) yes we reply.
You will all be comfortable with that one, he says then to the licences, a quick check of your details and driving license and your given directions to the storage area outside give this paper to a guy in the booth outside and he will give you the keys.
We make our way to the big doors to exit the airport building the door opens and then when it hits you, the HEAT wow you didn’t release when you were inside because of the air conditioning but this heat hits you its so hot humid and fantastic compared to the wet, grey cold UK weather, you have arrived! ! YES.
You cross the access road where cars drop off or collect people arriving and make your way to what looks like a great big concrete car park, you find the Alamo hut there’s a guy in there he takes your paperwork and say all the vans are down there on the left they keys are in pick anyone that you like.
This is not quite the same as car hire in the UK where you get given the vehicle, in the USA with Alamo you simply choose your own soon were walking down a small row of vans, which one shall we choose they all look the same but you choose one that you think it better than the other load up all the kids and then the luggage.
Where the handbrake? everyone looks but can’t find it surely we must be stupid there has to be a handbrake somewhere off I go to find someone to help I return with a member of staff who does not quite understand the term handbrake.
He points to a little pedal off to the side if the driver's foot, well you mean the parking brake? Ah yes, we must do he pushes it down it’s like a ratchet on the handbrake in the UK and to get it off you pull it up with your foot and it flicks off ah something new there one to remember for future!
