Florida Guide > Hollywood Studios
These spectacular lights are shown at Hollywood Studios from around the first week in November through the holiday season. With no extra charge on your park ticket, it is so worth staying to see them light up and dance in the dark. You would be forgiven for thinking that they must just be some fancy lights put up for the festive time, as Disney do so well with all their decorations you expect nothing less.
WOW is all I can tell you. Spectacular is the right word for these amazing Osborne lights. The minute we walked up the street to the Boulevard entrance (by the backlot) you could feel the atmosphere and are dazzled by all the glittering lights. There are thousands of them all different colours, you just stand in awe of it all, there is even a hidden Mickey head to be seen on the huge Christmas tree all made out of lights. The toy soldiers stand so tall and bright, flying Angels circle above, Santa and his reindeer, wonderful coloured wreaths and more.
Then as you stand looking around at the different scenes the music starts and the lights all start dancing in time to the music. You cannot help but stand and smile.
While these dancing lights are going and you sing along with them, snow starts to fall and you really think Christmas has arrived. Children were screaming with delight as it fell. The snow falls were happening at intervals all through the evening so if you miss it, stand around a while it won’t be long before it falls again and the music starts playing.
We were lucky enough to go on an evening when Fantasmic was showing as well so it really was a double delight for us. Hollywood Studios has always been our favourite park so going in November and seeing these for the first time really made our trip a time to remember.
The history behind why the lights have made it to Hollywood Studios is lovely.
The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights tradition began in 1986 in Arkansas, by Jennings Osborne who put up a string of a thousand lights as a Christmas gift for his daughter. Each year more lights were added and got brighter and brighter until finally there were complaints from neighbours when there were 3 million of them. The neighbours said they were a public nuisance.
The lights got moved to Disney Hollywood Studios in 1995 and are now enjoyed by Disney guests from all over the world. How lovely for us that this tradition still continues. Jennings died in July 2011.
We never knew this until going last year and it is so nice that this is a tradition shared by all.
