A taste of the Orient
Many visitors to this website will be looking forward to their next Florida visit partly because they enjoy the wide range of excellent food available in the Orlando area. However one aspect of food that has been sorely lacking in the States for as long as I have been visiting is the traditional British favourite, curry. Now I would agree with you if you said that you wouldn’t expect such cuisine in the Orlando area, and could happily go without for a couple of weeks. But do you not get the same urge as I do, after a week of burgers and freedom fries? Well, I am delighted to report that all is not lost, because there are in fact some quite reasonable Indian restaurants springing up to cater for the demand of the spice-lovers. Whilst traditionally Indian restaurants in America could be accused of serving fairly bland fare, attuned more to the North American palette, there is a growing awareness of the British appetite for more tasty, fragrant, spicy food.
My favourite by a long chalk, and the reason for this brief article, is a newish establishment on the US27 just south (left) of the end of the 192, called Sangam Indian Cuisine. This is proper British-style curry at it’s best, bursting with flavour and fragrance, as spicy as you could wish, and of course as mild as you might wish as well. For once an Indian restaurant in America can produce what you would expect from a similar establishment in the UK, with strong pungent Madras dishes, creamy kormas, eye-watering vindaloos, tasty karahis and jalfraizis, and a very good interpretation of the UK’s national dish, which is of course chicken tikka masala.
The menu is nicely balanced with a fine array of appetisers, a spread of good tandoori options, and a specialty seafood section, taking advantage of the abundant fresh fish to be had from Floridian waters. An endless selection of vegetable dishes complements the main event, and the usual array of breads and sides are all available.
All in all a great find and one I am happy to recommend to you as worth a detour to enjoy. The address of Sangams is 101 Divine Drive, Polo Park; tel. 863 424 8383. Their opening hours include lunch from 12-3 and dinner from 5-9.30 Sunday to Thursday, 5-10 Friday and Saturday. Eat in or take out! To cap it all they also offer free local delivery.
