OLETA RIVER

Oleta River State Park is situated in north Miami at 3400 n. e. 163 street (off the I. 95)

This area dates back as far as 5000 B. C. when the Native Americans known as Tequesta Indians made this fertile area their home. This was the perfect place for the hunter gatherers with its riches from the sea and many wild animals.

If we scroll forward many centuries then this was part of the route used in the second Seminole war to gain access to the south from Loxahatchee.

At this time there were a number of farms along the river that grew fruit and vegetables and the town of Ojus was built. There was a Native American trading post built in what is now known as Greynolds Park.

In 1992 the name was changed from the rather off putting Big Snake Creet to Oleta River. This was done by the developers in order not to scare the public

Here you can swim in the sea, walk the trails or fish from the pier or intra coastal water ways.

Every month they hold several special events. A night hike is held every first saturday of the month. Turn up at least quarter of an hour before sunset and you will hike for approximately one and a half hours.

A camp fire event takes place on the first friday of every month and here you can take part in arts and crafts and learn about history. They will toast marshmallows at some time in the evening and you are required to take something to sit on and a drink. If you have a musical instrumnet then take that along too for a camp fire sing a long.

Guided nature walks happen ist sat in the month from june to august only. These start at 10. a. m. A naturalist will lead you on a tour that lasts around one and a half hours and tell you all about the fauna.

The walking club meet every monday, wednesday and friday at 6. p. m. and walk the trails together.

It is somewhat astonishing to find all this natural beauty and peace in the middle of one of the worlds most bustling cities but there you are!
