New York – Lake George
If you visit New York during winter then Lake George is a good place for a weekend winter getaway. Once the lakes freeze and the trees have a snow blanket it’s time to embrace the winter season. You will find downhill skiing and snowboarding, over 200 miles of snowmobile trails, back-country trails, ice fishing competitions and some indoor events.
Four local snowmobile clubs maintain over 200 miles of corridor and secondary trails. The South Warren Trail system includes sections along the Hudson River and also Prospect Mountain. Thurman Connection trails provide forested routes that meander down the Hudson River. Trailblazers in North Warren combine back country riding with runs on Brant Lake and Loon Lake. You can also ride the trail to Kipp Mountain for views of Loon and Schroon Lakes. Trails are maintained at the north end of Lake George which provides a spectacular view over the Lake.
Local anglers know that some of the best ice fishing in the south-eastern Adirondacks can be found in the Lake George Area. Smaller lakes like Glen, Thirteenth and Brant are normally the first to freeze over which gives you an earlier chance to try this sport. While various types of fish can be found in each, most of these lakes also have some spring brown and rainbow trout. 32-mile long Lake George takes longer to freeze over than other lakes in the area, however once it does, it becomes the main attraction for ice anglers. This lake offers quality angling for yellow perch, northern pike as well as trout. You can also find landlocked Atlantic salmon which is a prevalent as well.
Hire some snowshoes or back country skis and you will have endless miles of trails available once the snow begins to fall. They can take you to scenic overlooks, mountain cabins or a simple forested shelter. Classic cross-country skiers have a choice of trails from pristine to newly tracked trails.
February is when it’s the Winter Carnival time in the Lake George area. The Brant Lake Winter carnival has vintage snowmobiles on display, invites you to try a hockey shoot-out or cheer for your favourite outhouse racing team. The day concludes with a bonfire and fireworks display.
The Lake George Winter Carnival has been providing winter entertainment for 55 years. Every weekend in February it features a host of outdoor activities. You can see motorcycles, trucks and cars race on an icy oval track, have a dog sled ride or just toast marshmallows on the beach. However for me the best part is getting your fingers sticky at the chicken wing cook-off.
At the end of a chilly day there are plenty of local places to stay. You can warm yourself by a fireplace in a local lodge or cabin, stay at a charming B& B, or take advantage of a full-service hotel.
