Montu – Busch Gardens, Tampa Bay
Busch Gardens, Tampa has some wonderful rollercoaster rides – Sheikra being the most well known. However as you park your car and take the tram ride to the entrance, looming 150 high above into the sky is Montu’s towering cream coloured track. Turning right as you enter the park you will find this exciting ride in the ‘Egypt’ section. Montu gets its name from the Egyptian god of solar and warrior god Montu.
Montu was opened on 16th May 1996 and was built by the same company that designed ‘Kumba’ another Busch Gardens ride . When Montu opened it was the world’s fastest and tallest inverted roller coaster reaching speeds of 60 mkiles per hour. Although this record has since been lost it still holds the record for the fasted number of inversions with seven for riders to experience.
Boarding the ride you sit on seats which hang from the track above. After strapping yourself in the floor lowers to leave your feet dangling freely. As you begin your journey smoothly you dip down turning to the right out of the station and start your high ascent taking you 150 feet up into the sky. Then your travelling down a 128 feet drop rushing into a verticle loop travelling at over 60 miles per hour. There are zero G rolls and elements where you are flipped upside down several times. Then Montu slows down on a block brake - but no this isn’t the end. Once again you find yourself taking a twisting dive and going through another large loop before finishing with a corkscrew of twists.
As you ride Montu you will have experienced seven inversions, a 104 foot verticle loop, an Immelmann loop – a half loop into a half twist and curve in the opposite direction to which you came, a zero G role, two inversions and a 66 foot verticle loop topping it all off with a corkscrew.
I find Montu a most exhilerating ride – I love the feel of my feet dangling freely, travelling through the sky! When Montu slows down two thirds through the ride it gives the illusion you have reached the end with a surprise as you speed up again. ‘Montu’ lasts three minutes and riders must be 4 feet 6 inches tall.
If you enjoy rollercoasters give Montu a go and enjoy! Busch Gardens is approximately an hour from the main vacation homes in Orlando and is open most days of the year. Opening hours may vary so check for your day. Tickets are available through the Orlando Villas website at competive prices.
