Mimi’s Cafe at The Loop
Mimi’s is a new addition to the expanding area around the Loop shopping area. It is across John Young Parkway from the main shopping area and next to the Ashley furniture store.
I have to say the name did not entice to go in – it didn’t sound very appealing. But the restaurant was recommended to us and we thought we would give it a go.
The restaurant is very pleasant inside – light and spacious and decorated in New Orleans style. Ask for a table to the left side if you can as it is more comfortable there than to the right where the kitchens are and with cosy booths to sit in.
The menu covers all sorts of choices – everything from burgers to sweet and sour to chicken pot pies. There are some seasonal specials and we had zesty golden buffalo shrimp as appetizers which were lovely and also tried the pan seared scallop and butternut squash ravioli – this was delicious, not a large portion but very rich! They have an extensive homemade soup menu with different daily options and onion soup every day.
The bread selection was interesting but other than the white buns not to my taste. In fact some of it was like malt loaf!
One part of the menu is for those who want a smaller portion in the ‘Just enough’ section and certainly this was a great option for me. There is a lunch and dinner option. I had surf and turf which came with a delicious salad with strawberries and balsamic. I would have a side portion of fries or baked potato with this next time.
On a second visit one of our party had the spicy baby back ribs, another the full side of ribs (enormous portion! ) while another had liver, onions, bacon and mash potato that he raved about. All very enjoyable. I had a pasta and chicken dish which was far too much for me – be warned!
Oh and they do serve a very nice gin and tonic in here and if you are driving have a roses lime with soda – the British have educated them to this drink!
For pudding they do a trio taster portion of either traditional desserts or mousses. We found that one between two was more than enough! Bread and butter pudding, chocolate brownies and apple cinnamon crisp.
Fancy giving it a go? Have a look at their website and make your choice before you go. www. mimiscafe. com There is also a Mimi’s in the Millenia Mall.
