Sci-Fi Diner - A blast from the past
If you are visiting Disney's Hollywood Studios and fancy eating in a different place to the usual fast food joint then check out the Sci-Fi Diner.
Located near Jim Henson's Muppets 3D, you might almost walk straight past if you don't realize its there. The outside is fairly unobtrusive and uninviting but this completely underestimates the treat in store for you.
It is best to try and book a table early as it gets very busy, especially around the usual mealtimes. We always book at the dining reservations hut when we arrive at the park. This is just up the main street at the junction of Hollywood and Vine St.
Once you have checked in you wait in an area with plain wooden benches and posters on the walls. Still nothing to write home about, and the first time we visited we were wondering if we had made a mistake by booking it.
When your table is ready your server escorts around the back of the restaurant past hoardings and billboards. You are so taken aback when you finally get a glimpse of the restaurant proper that it’s hard to believe this little gem is so miss able from the outside.
The whole "interior" of the restaurant is designed to look like an old fashioned drive in movie theatre, complete with night sky and twinkling stars. The effect is truly stunning. The "tables" are old fashioned 50's style convertible cars. 2 passengers in front and 2 behind.
Your server takes drinks orders while you peruse the menu. Although the food is classic 50's American fast food, it in no way resembles the usual burger from the chain stores. There is a wide selection, from salads to steaks and chicken, and it is all good value and tastes great.
Ahead of you is a giant screen, just like a real drive in, showing old B movies trailers and adverts. You eat your meal to the accompaniment of "Creatures from the Black Lagoon" or "It came from Outer Space". The adverts are even more hilarious as these are genuine 50's adverts, which becomes apparent when you see ad's that make the "little women’s" role in the home more satisfying...
The whole experience is fantastic, more so if you enjoy movies in general. Kids also had a great time experiencing something that their grandparents probably took for granted.
So if you are feeling hungry whilst on a visit to Hollywood Studios, then make a beeline for the Sci-Fi Diner and transport yourself back to a bygone age where men were men and monsters always got their comeuppance by the end of the film ?
