Market Place Downtown Disney - Part 1
When you wake up on your first morning in Orlando, a good way to immerse yourself gently into the spirit of Disney is with a visit to Market Place in Downtown Disney. Here you will get the feel of what you are about to experience when you do your first ever full day at Walt Disney World.
You will get an idea of what is in store for you, but without the tired feet. It is mainly about the shopping here, which is actually a great help if you want to go back and buy something you forgot to get on your days in Disney World. The largest store is The Disney Store, which sells practically everything that you can get at Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and Epcot. Room after room is filled with toys, clothes, kitchenware and houseware. All of course Disney themed.
There is a speciality Christmas Shop, called Disney’s Days of Christmas, which is open all year round, but an absolute must see. It is filled with all the wonders of Christmas, the decorations, toys and clothes, again, all Disney themed. After 30 years of visiting Florida, I now have just about every Disney character hanging from my Christmas tree.
The speciality cook shop is attached to the Earl Of Sandwich restaurant, which is definitely worth a try for lunch – you’ll never see a normal sandwich in the same light again! Everything is Mickey Mouse shaped here, Mickey Mouse ears plates, Mickey and Minnie salt and pepper and of course a Mickey Mouse kettle. Mickey Mouse cookie cutters shaped in Mickey Mouse ears are a great favourite with tourists to take back home as are the Mickey tea towels and aprons.
A sports shop called Team Mickey, which is mainly American sports oriented, is well worth a visit even if you are not American, many British children love to wear American baseball or football team shirts back home.
The huge toy store, called Once Upon A Toy, has a whole room dedicated to Mr Potato Head. Children can try out the pieces before they buy (or just play without buying). All the usual Disney toys are here plus their latest addition, Duffy the Disney Bear. Buzz Lightyear is a big feature at the moment and there are lots of Buzz toys to buy.
A great favourite with the slightly older children is the Lego store, one of the biggest in the world, it has some of the most amazing sculptures made of Lego outside the store and inside, paradise for small boys wanting to build everything in Lego.
In part 2 – all the other attractions including, the restaurants.
