LITTLE TALBOT ISLAND
Little Talbot Island State Park is located in Jacksonville, 17 miles east of mile post exit 35. 8A. This has been a State Park since 1952 and is one of the last almost undisturbed barrier islands in Florida.
This park has an English connection since it was named after Lord Baron Talbot.
Little Talbot is a Sea Island. To qualify as a sea island you have to be separated from the mainland by estuaries and marsh and separated from other short curved islands by water ways.
This State Park has salt marsh on the inland side and glorious beaches on the other. It has been shaped by the strong winds and tides that give it a unique eco system and variety of flora and fauna.
The beach is accessed by several board walks and is almost 5 miles long. It is well supplied with loos and showers and it is worth mentioning that the handicapped facilities are pretty good.
An outstanding opportunity at this park is the seg way tours. These are run by Segway Eco Motion Tours who are a park service provider.
This is a great way to explore the island and they take you through maritime forest to the beach via the nature trails. There is a head set provided so that your guide can point out all the interesting sights and the tour lasts around two and a half hours.
It is best to book a tour in advance ; call 904 251 9477.
Another way to see this island is on the water and you can tent a canoe or kayak from the visitor provider. If you prefer a guided tour, then they will be able to organise that too. It is here that you will be able to pick up some drinks and snacks. Call 904 251 2320 for more info.
Anglers can catch a huge variety of fish here, black drum, flounder, trout and red fish are all plentiful. Go to the coastal salt marsh to cast off.
The rangers here host a huge amount of special events, among them are talks, hikes and animal encounters; there is almost bound to be something happening during your stay. Call ahead to see what is scheduled so that you can plan your visit.
