Landscaping at Disney
Whilst visiting the Disney parks, hotels, golf courses and Downtown Disney I bet you have never given a second thought to the maintenance and gardening carried out by their horticulture staff. Six hundred and fifty specialists are employed by Disney to look after four million trees, shrubs and flowers and what a magnificent job they do!
Each plant is thoughtfully placed to add colour, act as a backdrop or stage to every area within the forty-seven square miles of Disney property. During the summer months alone, their gardeners plant over three million bedding plants! Every season the plants will be changed ensuring that the planting is always at its very best for the visiting guests to enjoy and admire.
There are nearly thirteen thousand roses, composed of over one hundred varieties, planted around the Walt Disney World properties. Next time you visit the Magic Kingdom check out the rose display garden near Cinderella’s Castle.
Each theme park has its own special landscaping setting the scene. Notice the way the exotic jungles of Magic Kingdom’s Adventureland disappear into the dry, cactus filled Frontierland. Whilst over at The Oasis in Animal Kingdom the lush greenery changes to the genuine looking savannah of the Kilimanjaro Safari ride. Every little detail is precise and is probably missed by most holidaymakers who are here perhaps for the first or second time. But after a couple of visits you begin to notice these details as you walk around, taking the time to appreciate all the thought and imagination that must have gone into developing them.
When you next visit MGM Studios look at the way Hollywood Boulevard is lined with palm trees on either side. You could almost be there, amid the glamour of Los Angeles in California! One of my favourites are the topiaries. Over one hundred shapes ranging from geometric to the adorable Disney characters. Whilst walking around the parks keep an eye open for them especially during Epcot’s Flower and Garden Festival, the children will love them.
There are an incredible eight thousand major plants inside the Disney buildings and hotels. Palm trees are in abundance in the lobby of the Grand Floridian and hanging baskets are just about everywhere at the Polynesian Resort. Over five thousand hanging baskets are planted out and hung up around the Disney properties each year!
There are nearly two thousand acres of turf consisting of six different varieties. The Disney gardeners mow the grass twice a week, very often three times a week and they have worked out that, if they mowed in a straight line, the amount of grass which they cut would extend to nearly half a million miles each year!
So next time you visit Disney, sit down, relax and take a look around to appreciate all the hard work and effort of the wonderfully talented gardeners!
