Highway 192 - An attraction in itself
Orlando’s highway 192 has long been known for its proximity to Walt Disney World.
You can travel from the West at Highway 27 along the 192 for 24 miles to where it meets the Florida Turnpike and never run out of shops, restaurants or attractions to visit.
Places to eatThere are countless restaurants and eateries along the entire length, and you will see everything from the usual fast food places like McDonalds and Burger King to superb family owned restaurants offering food from around the world. There are plenty of choices available to even the pickiest eater and this is where the “All you care to eat” buffets come into their own.
You can also opt to eat your way around the world with food offerings from every continent.
ShopsShopping is probably the next biggest attraction in Orlando after the Theme Parks, and the 192 has more than its fair share of shops. Like restaurants there are plenty of small malls and individual shops. There are the usual big stores selling all your favourite sports wear, denim outlets and electronic gear. But there are many smaller outlets selling the weird and the wonderful. There are several good malls such as the Osceola Square Mall and the Value Outlet Mall. Both have a variety of outlet stores such as Nike, Adidas and Denim World. Then of course there is a Wal-Mart supercentre which sells just about everything you can think of, and is an experience on its own.
AttractionsFrom a water park to mini golf to helicopter rides, the list of things to do is plentiful. Water Mania is a water park along the lines of Wet N Wild and near the junction of Celebration Avenue. It is open throughout the summer season and has over 36 acres of slides, flumes and water fun.
There are several mini golf courses along the 192. These are usually open from mid morning till midnight throughout the season and are a great way to spend a couple of hours.
Old Town is an old fashioned boardwalk with unique shops and restaurants and several fairground rides. It is well worth a visit especially during the evenings when they have their classic car rally’s.
Helicopter rides can be taken which include flights over most of the Orlando area. Although there is a no fly zone directly over Disney these days, there are still spectacular views to be had from the helicopter. Also great for getting a birds eye view of some of the rivers and swamp areas that Florida is famous for.
Airboat rides are another enjoyable half day excursion. There is an airboat rental along the 192 by marker 15. You drive the airboat yourself, and navigate along a small lake surrounded by swamp land. We have done this a couple of times and seen all kinds of wildlife.
This is a very brief introduction to a road that we probably all drive along to get to Walt Disney World and the well known Orlando attractions, but in my opinion is an attraction in it’s own right.
