KMart versus Target.
It is a shame about the current state of K Mart. This was one of the few stores around when we visited 30 years ago but they look shabby and unloved these days. Recently, I decided to pop in after many years' absence and honestly, they have a good range at good prices. Not always the top quality but sift through. The designs are up to date and some items they have a bigger selection than Target, for instance. While we were there they had a sale on with around 10% to 40% off and dump bins that had even bigger discounts.
The staff were very thin on the ground however and some items not priced. Each time, I needed to ask something, I had to go over to the lone till operator and wait for him to be free. The range of hair accessories was awesome and in fact so comprehensive I could not make a choice and bought nothing. Buyers regrets afterward. I also noticed that they no longer seem to stock Martha Stewarts' range of housewares that used to give them some kudos. Jaclyn Smith, yes; but really, does she not smack of yesteryear? They still have a food section but that looked uninspiring and not very comprehensive. I cannot but think that K Mart need some investment to keep up with todays high standards and frankly to make the stores more inviting. However, I understand that they have been in cash flow problems for years so guess it is just not available.
Now take Target, all the stores I have been in are bright and well maintained. The stock is well organised and seems to change and update. They even have their very own dollar section (though to be fair, they will not trouble Dollar Tree with their current range) The larger stores have a good food section with a nice fresh veg and fruit department. In the past, they have offered generous samples but not so much now. What a shame, I often used to discover something good that I had not tried before. The stores I use have a Coffee shop in store and who doesn' t want a latte or cappuccino after they shop?
So, on balance, comparing the 2 similar stores, opt for Target, however, if you have time on your hands, do nip round a K Mart as well and you may be surprised and bag a bargain.
