It’s Tough to be a Bug in Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Situated in Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom, underneath the Tree of Life, this 3D adventure, complete with smelly-vision, can provide a much-needed spot of relief on those hot summer days. But at anytime of the year it is superb Disney entertainment, which older children and adults alike will certainly enjoy.
Inspired by the Disney-Pixar movie “A Bugs Life” the show includes Flik and Hopper from the original film, together with many new characters.
The entertainment starts from the moment you enter the ‘canyons’ at the foot of the Tree of Life. On a busy day, when you may have to queue, you can pass time, and keep the children entertained, by ‘spotting’ animals and insects that are carved into the walls of the canyons and around the trunk of the tree itself. Make a game of the waiting by seeing who can be the first to spot an armadillo, a lion or for the more adventurous – a pangolin! Further good news is that Disney even provides fans blowing a cool spray of water onto you as you move through the maze of passages.
Eventually you will reach the main waiting area, which resembles the underground passages of an anthill. Here, if you look around the walls, rather than just waiting for the theatre doors to open, you will see posters advertising well known films – but with a humorous ‘bugs’ slant on the titles.
Once the doors open, and you are safely seated (guests in wheelchairs / ECVs may remain in their vehicles) you are invited by Flik to become ‘honorary’ bugs and see life from an insect’s perspective, with the help of your special ‘bug” 3D glasses. However, Hopper is not at all pleased that Flik has welcomed you into their world and will try to give the humans a touch of their own medicine by attempting to have you exterminated! Guests are then treated to a 3-D feast of entertainment from a variety of amusing and amazing insects, including giant spiders who shoot darts at the audience, bees, termites, and Stinky Claire, the dung beetle, who as her name suggests will tickle another of your senses – smell!
Great all-round family entertainment, although very young children could be a little frightened by certain special effects and also the size of some of the insects. But one word of warning – wait for all the insects to leave before you exit your seats. The show is not over until the lights go up!
