Is upgrading your seats on the flight worth it?
Flights are one of the largest outlays you will need to factor in when wanting to holiday in Florida. For most the flight is part of the holiday experience and because of this we often get asked if it is worth upgrading the seats on the flight. Economy can sometimes be a little cramped and because of this a lot of people now look to travel either business or premium services.
Having travelled both economy and premium services on numerous carriers before I feel that we have a little knowledge on the differences, however everyone is different and different people have different views to the ones I might have.
For many people money is a min factor and because of this they discount the outlay from the start. Even the fact you would have a bigger seat, priority boarding and potentially better meals on board, this for some does not really matter as the cost is just too much to do. For people with more than one child upgrading can often add £2000- £8000 to the cost of the holiday (depending if it is premium, business or first).
If you can’t quite stomach the above prices there are cheaper alternatives and these are to book flights via the Charter airlines and then upgrade to their premium seating service. We did this last year and for a family of 4 flying with Thomas Cook and the total was £800 (£200 each). For this we got larger seats, extra baggage allowance and priority boarding. Don’t expect the better meals or better service, but seating was on par with Virgin Premium Economy, so pretty goo and a fraction of the price. For some this might be a good compromise if they can' t afford to upgrade on the main scheduled carriers.
If you can afford to fly first or upper class you are transported into a different league totally with flat beds, upgraded meals, onboard bar, limo transfers etc. You do pay for this mind as most of the seats cost in excess of £2500 each.
Do you get value for money? – Well this is in my view depends. There is no denying the seats, service and whole experience of upgrading is very nice and can add to the overall experience of the holiday. If you can afford to do it, yes it will be worth it. My take is why not fly Economy and then spend the extra money on the property and activities when in Florida. For the 9 hours of the flight is it worth the extra outlay when you will be spending 1/2 weeks on Holiday.
