Golf at Providence
If you are staying anywhere around Poinciana, Champions Gate or along Ronald Regan Parkway then Providence is handy for a game of golf. Open to the public, the rates are competitive with a twilight fees costing between $30 and $50 depending on the time of year. Tee times can be booked online if preferred.
Situated along route 17/92, the entrance is about a mile and a half from CR 532 just past the junction with CR 54. Turning in to Providence from route 17/ 92 you will need to show photo id to the guard at the gatehouse. Once through the gates it is a short drive to the clubhouse and your journey will take you through the community where developments with names such as Drayton Woods, Cortland Woods and Lexington Green showcase homes costing from the $100' s to over a $1000.
The golf clubhouse is situated in the heart of the community alongside the communal clubhouse and facilities, which are not open to the general public.
Once you have deposited your clubs at the bag drop and signed in at the pro shop, a set of stairs will take you down to the practice greens and driving range which, in common with many US courses, are far superior to public courses in the UK.
The players on the course are a mix of residents and visitors ( mainly tourists to the Orlando area) and the atmosphere is friendly.
The 7000 yard par 72 course, which opened in 2007, is designed by Mike Dasher who favours the European style courses, but typical of many US resort style courses, the front 9 holes are lined with properties which give many of us the opportunity to see how the other half lives as some of the mansion type houses must be seen to be believed! Not all the plots are developed, there is still some building and some plots are still vacant. The back 9 holes do not feature any properties but if rumours are to be believed they could well do in the future.
The course features fresh water creeks and wetlands and it is not uncommon to see alligators congregating around the water. In common with all local courses it is not recommended to search for your ball in the rough as it is undoubtedly inhabited by snakes and the author of this article also reports seeing wild turkey on the course!
The course is a fair test of golf and suitable for the less experienced player, not too difficult with some more challenging holes. The author describes it as a game, of 2 halves and has a definite preference for the back 9 holes!
If you are looking for a reasonably priced round of golf in pleasant surroundings, Providence is surely worth a shot!
