GEORGE CRADY FISHING PIER
George Crady Bridge fishing pier was named after a state representative of the same name who was a keen supporter of the State Parks department. This park is located in Jacksonville on the Nassau / Ouval border and crosses tha Nassau Sound.
This is considered to be one of the best places to fish in the whole of north east Florida and believe me, that is saying something! There is no traffic allowed on this bridge, so you can be assured of a peaceful days fishing; and you will have a good days catch!
In the spring and autumn, there are vast numbers of trout and red fish (though these are present in fewer numbers all year round) Head for the small grass flats to find a variety of other fish. The state record flounder was caught here, so that is a challenge for you! You may also catch jacks, drums and tarpon.
Tarpon is greek for large eye and tarpon certainly have 2 of them, along with a large mouth. They are usually found in warm, coastal waters or they will swim up stream. They are mostly found in large numbers in Florida and the West Indies.
Females can be as much as 8 feet long and weigh in at 350 lbs (that would make an impressive fish supper) males are smaller and lighter. Females live up to 50 years and males up to 30 years.
There is a concession holder near the north end of the peir who supplies tackle, bait and advice in equal measures; you can also get food and drink here. Twice a year they hold a fishing seminar to share their knowledge, check with Nassau bail and tackle to see when the next seminar is to be held.
You will need to have a fishing licence; these are available from sports stores, Walmarts and also on line.
If you have non anglers in your party, do not worry; just take them to adjascent Amelia Island and they will have a good time too. Also near by are Pumpkin Hill and Yellow Bluff Fort.
So you see there is truly something for everyone in this area and probably a few fine fish for your dinner too!
During the summer please go armed with a high factor sun screen, a shady sun hat, insect repellant and plenty to drink.
