GatorLand (12)
An interesting and local attraction for all ages.
It' s a place you drive past and comment on very much like it' s nearest neighbour Tupperware HQ on the way to Costco or the Florida Mall. The time we arranged to go our plans were tharted due to the extensive fire in the entrance area, the large landmark open alligator mouth. Not to be put of we planned it for our return visit last april.
In the 6 months following the fire they have redeveloped an entrance area, and distracted away from the damage.
On entering the park it' s worth taking note of the show times, they seem very tacky but great family fun, involving the park staff and visitors fully. The gator wrestling wwas a hit even with our 5 yr old who was so imresssed, but not eenough to go for her picture taken. However many were there for the once in a lifetime experience of an upclose encounter with an alligator.
The breeding program explains the whole development cycle and growth processes, seeing the gators on different sectors in relation to their size/age and development. Seeing up close and in reality a gator that was found just in a backyard brings it home they are potentially to be found anywhere, throughout the state.
Also to be found here are various birds and parrakeets that can be found in florida, lots of information available about the birds and wildlife found within the area.
There is a great woodland trek available, with information guides showing the potential wildlife you may encounter at different times throughout your trek. The trek is fully decked with side fences and ssheltered areas where you can rest and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the undergrowth.
An interesting area towards the rear of the park are the separtate pens where you can see a variety of crocodiles from around the world in their own habitats.
There is an extensive childrens water play area, which on a hot florida day is a blessing to give the kids a chance to cool off and blow off steam and have fun. With covered areas so parents canb relax whilst observing the kids in a magical eenvironment. How many kids don' t enjoy waterplay, epecially in the hot florida sun.
You will find a few gift shops throughout the main area that have souvenirs appropriate to the park and environment, that are very reasonably priced.
All in all we found gatorland to be a great change from the hustle and bustle of the larger parks, allowing time to enjoy floridas nature in a secure enviroment. We would recommend it to first time visitors and also to well traveled Florida visitors, there' s something for everyone at a reasonable price.
