Fantasmic at Disney’s Hollywood Studios
If there was one live show that I had to pick out of all the brilliant Walt Disney World shows, Fantasmic would be my first choice. It combines twenty-five minutes of drama, action, originality, fireworks, lasers and animated water to provide guests with one magnificent extravaganza.
Fantasmic takes place in Disney’s Hollywood Studios towards the end of Hollywood Boulevard in the Hollywood Hills Amphitheatre. Look for the Tower of Terror and it is just before you reach the building on the right hand side. Such a popular show is Fantasmic that you will probably want to arrive at least one hour before show time. There are plenty of seats, room to accommodate one thousand and five hundred guests, but they do fill up very fast. The theatre actually opens ninety minutes before the show starts. You may be tempted to sit right at the front if there are vacant seats when you arrive, but beware, because of the water screens, which are used a lot during the show; you might get a bit damp. This is fine in the summer months when you might want to cool down but during the winter months it can get a bit nippy during the evenings.
The show begins with Mickey Mouse as a conductor standing on an island and as the music starts up, the water around the island begins to dance. This is when the first of the water screens emerge from the lake. Moving pictures from Disney animated films are projected onto these screens.
The water disappears and a live action sequence commences from the film Pocahontas. After this we are introduced to the villains in the Disney films including Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmatians, Ursula from The Little Mermaid, and Scar from The Lion King to name but a few. However, no villain is a match for our hero Mickey, not even Maleficent from the film Sleeping Beauty! She transforms into a forty-foot high fire-breathing dragon setting fire to the water surrounding the island. This is another reason to sit a little way back from the front rows; the heat can be quite alarming. However, it would be sure to dry you off after the soaking from the water screens! Our all action Mickey creates a wall of water around the island, which puts out the flames and conquers the dragon.
The finale includes an eighty-foot replica of the boat from Steamboat Willie featuring twenty-six Disney characters singing and waving to the audience as it sails by.
We have watched Fantasmic many, many times during our visits to Orlando and we never tire of it. It really is one sensational show, worthy of at least one visit.
