Fantasmic at Disney's Hollywood Studios

If you like pyrotechnics, laser shows, special effects, water shows, spectacular lights and Disney characters, this live production at the Hollywood Hills Amphitheatre in Disney’s Hollywood Studios theme park has it all.

Fantasmic is shown only on selected night so your best bet is to check the calendar of events for Hollywood Studios to ensure the production is being shown the night of your visit. On some nights Fantasmic is shown twice. The first show is at 9:00pm and the second show is 10:30pm. The second show is sometimes less crowded. A benefit of going to the second show is that you can ride the park rides without waiting in long lines while many of the park’s guests are in the amphitheatre watching the first Fantasmic show.

The show features many of the Disney villains and heroes in starring roles and shows “good” versus “evil”. Of course, Mickey is the star who defeats evil. You will hear some familiar music and see many Disney characters but I won’t go into details about the show as it is something you have to see for yourself and anticipate what will happen next.

This is a very popular show and you should arrive early to get the best seats. In the past we have arrived one and a half hours before show time and were able to get good seats. The amphitheatre seats approximately 1500 guests and while there are no really bad seats, I like the seats in the centre section about half way up in the theatre. If you sit near the front (about the first 5 rows ) you will get wet from the water that sprays throughout the show.

During the show, clips from different Disney movies seem to be projected on walls of water. The music is loud and some of the scenes with villains may be frightening to small children. The show last 25 minutes and there are lots of exciting moments. The seats can get a little hard after sitting so bring a jacket or sweater to sit on. Also on a chilly evening the seats can be cold. The amphitheatre is open air and production is subject to cancellation if the weather is bad.

If you do not want to line up early for seats, you can make reservations for the Fantasmic Dinner Package. Make advanced dinner reservation at three participating restaurants: The Brown Derby Restaurant, Mama Melrose Italian Restaurant or Hollywood and Vine Restaurant and you will receive a special ticket that gives you access for that night to reserved seating in a special section.

While you are waiting for the show to begin there will be some pre-show entertainment and audience participation games that kids would like. Within the theatre area you will find washrooms and plenty of refreshment stands. We usually stake out our seats and then one of us will go and pick snacks which we enjoy while we are waiting for the show to start.

The last scene is one that will send you away with a happy feeling. A steamboat carrying just about every Disney character passes by in front of the audience while cast members dance and wave. We find this a great way to end our day at the park.

After the show is over there is a mad dash to empty the theatre. Don’t rush to get out as there is a LARGE crowd and movement is slow. We usually hang back a bit and then slowly exit the park.

Go see it! ! If you enjoy the magic of Disney, this is one show you have to see at least once.
