EPCOT INTERNATIONAL FLOWER AND GARDEN FESTIVAL 2009 FOR CHILDREN
If you are lucky enough to be visiting Orlando between March 19th and May 31st, then there is a treat in store at Epcot, where the annual International Flower and Garden Festival takes place. Children will have plenty to occupy them during this period with special exhibitions and activities for them to take part in.
The magic begins as they walk through the entrance gates of Epcot and see the stunning and colourful topiary called ‘Cinderellabration. ’ This features an amazing floral display of expertly executed topiary figures, including Cinderella with Prince Charming, Beauty and the Beast, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as well as Sleeping Beauty. They will also be charmed by Princess Ariel from the Little Mermaid, who can be found by the front-entrance fountain.
But that is just the beginning of this topiary extravaganza, which included 70 different exhibits to charm both adults and children. Of course, Minnie and Mickey Mouse and friends will be celebrated here in topiary.
With the release of the children’s movie, ‘Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, ’ there has been an upsurge in the popularity of that perennial Disney favourite, Tinker Bell. Although she has always had a special place at Disney, and features prominently at the nightly firework display at Magic Kingdom, she has now been joined by her many pixie friends. There is a specially produced and quite whimsical ' Pixie Hollow Fairy Garden, ' where children will delight in the numerous colourful topiaries.
There are activities each day, where children can participate in hands-on activities. If they are dressed in either fairy or princess costumes, then they can join a special pixie procession. On March 21st, from 11. 00 am – 1. 00 pm the director and producer of ‘Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure’ will be available to meet guests.
For those children who like adventure, then there is the’ Pirates Adventure Zone, ’ where Peter Pan, Captain Hook and Croc appear as topiaries, and young pirates can explore this interactive space.
In March there is an Art in the Garden Weekend, and in Future World children can take part in a ‘Kid’s Paint Out. ’
Most children are fascinated by insects, so the ‘I Dig Bugs’ exhibit shows how these tiny garden creatures play an important part in horticulture. There will be a ‘good bug’ release.
More topiary characters can be found at Simba’s Birthday Celebration, where there are more characters from the Walt Disney Lion King films. These can be found at World Showcase Plaza.
Children can also be introduced to the pleasures of gardening at the ' Growing Future Gardeners' family orientated exhibit. Here, children and adults can learn how to grow a pizza garden during the ‘Kids Gardening – It’s More Than Mud Pies’ exhibit from April 24th – 26th.
Finally, hundreds of butterflies can be found inside a walk-through screened enclosure at ' Minnie’s Magnificent Butterfly Garden. ' Here children will be able to enjoy a live exhibit which shows how a caterpillar become a chrysalis, before emerging as a beautiful butterfly.
With all these activities for children, Epcot will certainly be a great day out for all the family.
