Driving in Orlando
On previous trips when we have visited Orlando, my Husband has always been the driver. I have never felt confident enough to leave the comfort of my little clio and climb into a huge America car as a driver. The roads are much bigger, you need steps to climb into the cars, parking spaces are huge and the traffic is busy busy busy.
Having said all this, 2007 was the year of change for me.
On our last trip we hired a Jeep Commander. The car was beautiful. It was black with a caramel interior, 8 seats, massive boot and a cool stereo system. It reminded me very much of a ‘24’ car (only wish Jack Bauer came with it! )
I fell in love with the Jeep and decided that there was no way that I was NOT going to drive it, after all, it was built like a tank and surely people would get our of my way! ! !
So, I climb into the drivers seat and spent about 20 minutes playing with all the gadgets. Adjusting the steering height, chair recline and most importantly got the stereo tuned in. I started the car up and she roared into life!
I have never driven an automatic before either! This was Fun! No clutch, and the car was so smooth it felt like we were not even moving. We leave the car park and head out onto the main roads. I can honestly say that I don’t know what I was worrying about. Driving was a doddle.
The slower speed limits made it feel a lot more relaxed then driving at home. The bigger car made me feel more confident, and once you are on the roads everything seems to be the same size as the UK!
I managed to navigate out of the airport and 30 minutes later we arrived at our villa. For me, there was no going back. My husband was not going to get a look in at driving this car. I suddenly wanted to drive everywhere and kept trying to think of excuses to ‘pop’ out and drive! ! I was so excited about filling up with petrol it was sad!
Parking at the supermarket was no problem either. I thought it would be hard, but I found it easier to park the Jeep than any other car that I have driven!
All in all, if there are any people out there that are concerned about driving in Florida, all I can say is worry not! It is much more fun then driving at home, and you should treat yourself to an upgraded car, just to make it even more special!
